Natural Burial Grounds
The ethos behind a woodland burial is to return the body to the earth in a natural way with a completely environmentally friendly burial or scattering of ashes. A woodland burial is the perfect option for those looking for somewhere natural, peaceful and beautiful to say goodbye and celebrate the life of a loved one, as ceremonies can take place by the graveside or site where the ashes will be scattered. Many sites also provide indoor options for ceremonies if needed.
Simply select an area of the country below to view some of the woodland burial grounds near you. Please note that woodland burials are becoming increasingly popular and there are now over 270 sites across the UK, so this is not an exhaustive list.

Olney Green Burial Ground is a peaceful and fitting resting place set in nearly ten acres of beautiful countryside within a few miles of Milton Keynes, Bedford and Northampton.
Olney provides a resting place for all who embrace the countryside, love birdsong and wildlife, and who want to be at one with nature. Mowed pathways are maintained through the grass for easy access to individual graves, while the remaining grasses are left to grow naturally and provide a natural habitat for wildlife. As a green and environmentally friendly burial ground, Olney asks that trees are planted instead of headstones to create living memorials for all who rest there.
Celebrant-led funerals or funerals of any religious denomination are welcome, and these may be held at the graveside with live or recorded music played if desired. There is not likely to be another funeral on the same day, meaning there are no time constraints for ceremonies or for quiet reflection. Sometimes a marquee can also be provided on site, if required. Arnos Vale Natural Burial Woodland is situated at the top of Arnos Vale cemetery adjacent to Arnos Park in the heart of Bristol. The atmospheric five-acre woodland coombe was originally used as an orchard space by the Victorian owners, and the orchard has grown naturally over time to become a wildlife haven for many birds and animals, offering a peaceful space for those wishing to have a more natural final resting place.
The ground in the woodland is open to everyone, welcoming people of all beliefs, persuasions and values. For a more natural intimate setting for a funeral service, the Underwood Centre has a small outdoor covered area amongst the trees and can hold up to 50 people seated with room for standing. The Anglican chapel and the Spielman Centre are also available as indoor options for ceremonies.
The caterers at Arnos Vale can accommodate a wide range of menu options for mourners, from a simple cup of tea and slice of cake to more formal arrangements.

Atlantic Rest Natural Burial
07775 726 907
Atlantic Rest is a family owned and run natural burial ground situated in the beautiful Penlow Field in Woolley, Cornwall.
There are two areas in which burials can take place within Penlow Field: the first is near the top of the field in what will become the 'Wildflower Area', and the second is at the bottom of the field near the woodland. Each Atlantic Rest burial is very different and is individually tailored to the requirements of the family or the deceased's wishes. Outdoor ceremonies can be held at the graveside and can be conducted by a celebrant, religious minister or a friend or family member - anyone is welcome. Some families choose to tell the story of the life of the loved one, some bring along music to play, some read poetry, some bring whisky (insert favourite drink of loved one here) to have a toast. Some choose to bring flowers and each person can lay one on top of the coffin. It is really down to the imagination of the family - as long as it's legal and practical then it can be done!

Higher Ground Meadow
01935 891 245
The award-winning Higher Ground Meadow is set within an area of outstanding natural beauty with far-reaching panoramic views over the Dorset and Somerset countryside. It provides an ideal resting place for those who have an affinity with nature and the countryside, and offers families the perfect place to visit and cherish their memories.
The burial ground uses a 12-acre field on the higher ground of Underhill Farm and is blessed with an abundance of wildlife. There is also a small area of woodland available for burials in which trees can be planted, and this is creating a new copse within the meadow. Ashes can also be scattered or interred. Graveside ceremonies are welcomed at the Meadow, and in wet weather conditions these can be held in the hay barn. Ceremonies can be conducted by a celebrant or minister of your choice and can include any readings or music you wish. There is usually only one funeral per day, meaning loved ones can take their time to say their goodbyes. A beautiful wooden bier is also provided to carry the coffin to the graveside, creating a memorable occasion.
